Position Overview
The Police Officer's primary role is to prevent crime and the breach of public order. Primary responsibilities include protecting students, faculty, staff, campus visitors, property, and facilities from accidents, bodily harm, fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry; enforcing laws and traffic and parking regulations; apprehending violators; providing general information and assistance to the public; conducting criminal investigations; and participating in community oriented policing efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Investigate complaints or crimes
2. Enforce traffic and safety regulations in accordance with all municipal ordinances & state laws
3. Detection and prevention of crime
4. Apprehension and arrest of violators of both municipal ordinances & state laws
5. Participate in the investigation and follow-up of criminal cases as required
6. Respond to calls for service both on and off campus and submit required reports
7. Participate in all training provided and required by the department
8. Offer unique individual talents and ideas to advance the development of the officer and the department
9. Actively cultivate the highest professional relationships with other departments, outside agencies, and community groups
10. Maintain positive image with the public through actions that are both professional and impartial
11. Special assignments including university sporting events & concerts
12. Possible responsibilities may include:
  • Performance as a bike officer
  • Intoxilizer Operator
  • Crime Scene Tech
  • Critical Incident Team
  • Homeless Outreach Team
  • Instructor of DAAT, Firearms, Emergency Vehicle Operation, Vehicle Contacts, Active Shooter and/or First Aid/Combat Casualty Care
  • Drug Recognition Expert
  • Traffic Investigator
  • Tavern Car/Alcohol Enforcement
  • Field Training Officer
  • Police Officer Support Team (Peer Support)
  • Rifle Operator
  • Glock Armorer
13. May perform duties that include Star Chase, ALPR Car, Booking Officer duties and/or MIRT
14. Perform other related duties as required, assigned or requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must be at least 21 years of age.

Possess High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Must have 60 college credits upon graduating the Police Academy.

Graduation from certified academy with a Basic Course Certificate within the past three years, or employment as a police officer with a Wisconsin Certified Law Enforcement Agency within the past three years. (Applicant: Must submit a copy of Basic Academy Certificate with the application. If currently in an academy, include a letter from the academy stating projected graduation date. The basic academy certificate must be provided by time of appointment.

Must possess a valid Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Driver's License with favorable driving record at time of appointment.

Be a citizen of the U.S. or be a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship (Government Code Section 1031(a)).

Be free of any felony conviction and certain misdemeanor convictions including domestic violence offenses.

Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.

Effective interpersonal skills to resolve a wide variety of sensitive situations.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality; ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.

A strong commitment to providing top-quality customer service.

Ability to interact professionally and effectively with diverse publics is required.

Demonstrated ability to think and act effectively in emergency and sensitive situations.

Clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Ability to pass an extensive background investigation, a drug screen and psychological testing.
Marquette reserves the right to ask an employee at any time during employment to repeat all tests and investigations as stated above to remain employed in the Police Officer job.
The Police Officer must also be able to perform all duties and physical demands as required.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures.

Thorough knowledge of current Wisconsin criminal codes and laws.

Strong interest in the application of community policing methods.
