To perform professional and technical engineering work in an assigned area such as plan and development review, contract administration and design; and to provide technical staff assistance to higher level engineering staff.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey level class within the Engineering series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Assistant Civil Engineer by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and may be filled by advancement from the Assistant level.
Position Snapshot/A Day in the Life: The Associate Engineer position will be within the Land Development Division of the Public Works & Engineering Department. Under the direction of a Senior Civil Engineer or Senior Engineer, the position will manage land development projects from inception to construction completion. The Associate Engineer will work closely with the Planning Department staff to review and comment on complex entitlement applications as they are submitted to the Development Services Organization. Additionally, the position will work with other internal departments, including Finance, Fire and Building & Safety. Typical daily duties include reviewing site plans, tentative maps, drainage studies and other engineering documents during the initial entitlement stage, providing conditions of approval for infrastructure requirements, reviewing construction drawings and maps during the design stage, preparing staff reports for city council actions, and providing advice and support to city inspectors during the construction phase. Throughout these processes, the Associate Engineer shall perform at a high level of independence and shall continually coordinate with developers and their design team to ensure the most efficient workflow as practical. Strong written and verbal communication skills and understanding the role of all involved entities will be required to effectively perform daily activities for this position.

Experience: One (1) to two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in civil engineering. Preferred qualifications: Three (3) years of land development experiences in cities or counties.
Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a closely related field. Some additional years of experience and specialized training may substitute for some of the educational requirements. Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is preferred.
License or Certificate: Possession of, and continuously throughout employment, a valid CA Class "C" Driver's License.
Successful candidates will be required to complete an annual Statement of Economic Interest Form (700 Form) and bi-annual ethics training pursuant to AB 1234.
